The combination between microalgae and rhizobacteria has proven to be a revolutionary strategy to improve soil health and maximize crop yields. While the former act as prebiotics, the latter are natural biostimulants. The most recent studies indicate that both biotechnological innovations work synergistically, complementary and very effective. This is where two products like Spirunol and Bulhnova demonstrate enormous potential to improve the agricultural world.

Spirunol, a prebiotic for the field

Prebiotic products are those that provide the appropriate nutritional context for the proliferation of beneficial bacteria. Spirunol is rich in bioactive compounds, pigments, antioxidant molecules, proteins, peptides, free amino acids and other bioactive substances such as Phycocyanin-C. All of these, applied to crops, act with a prebiotic effect for the soil. That is, they not only have a direct effect on the root system, but also promote the growth of bacteria and other beneficial microorganisms that develop in the plant’s environment.

On the other hand, Bulhnova is a product formulated with plant growth promoting microorganisms (or PGPR, for its acronym in English).
By combining the two products, a synergistic effect is produced, since the rhizobacteria also take advantage of the prebiotic effect of Spirunol, thereby increasing the benefits of both the biostimulant and the biofertilizer.

Promising results

The synergy tests between Spirunol and Bulhnova are in the final stage, both for field studies and for tests carried out in the phytotron located at the Probelte agrobiotechnology plant. Antonio Bernal, director of R&D&i at Probelte, explains it: “We have designed a strategy that consists of carrying out a first application of Spirunol, in which we fill the soil with the bioactive components that the product contains and that will act as microorganism growth booster. “Next,” he continues, “in subsequent applications, we use Bulhnova. We have observed synergistic effects compared to when we use the products separately, demonstrating that this application strategy can improve the development of said microorganisms and their functions. as PGPR when they are applied following this strategy”.

Synergy with other products

Furthermore, the physicochemical characteristics of Spirunol allow a wide range of combinations with various specialties on the market. “It can be mixed with any other type of biostimulant or nutritional product,” explains the expert. In this way, microalgae combination strategies can be followed at key moments. For example, potassium fertilizers can be applied together with Spirunol to enhance the fattening and ripening of the fruits.

“The effect is more pronounced in short-cycle vegetables,” confirms Bernal, where it is key that the effects can be obtained more quickly, because this allows us to reach optimal production levels at harvest time, with improvements in caliber and quality. end of harvest. Of course, to be able to use it properly and get the full potential out of a tool like Spirunol, it must be done with knowledge and experience. After all, it is a highly technological product that, although it is easy to use and contains few or no contraindications for productivity, maximizing its potential requires a rigorous methodology adapted to each specific situation.
